The Board of Directors (BOD) serves as the governing body of Deccan Alumni Association of North America (DAANA). The BOD consists of alumni of Deccan College of Medical Sciences (DCMS), nominated and carefully selected by peers based on their credentials. The BOD is comprised of a President, Secretary, Treasurer and Officers.
The BOD coordinates activities of the various committees, helps organize reunions, cultural and educational (CME) events as well as supervises all philanthropic activities. The BOD also serves as a liaison between alumni and DCMS administration.
There are 11-15 members on the BOD at any given time. In the interest of diversity and inclusion, only two members from each batch are allowed on the BOD at any given time. The members serve a term of 2-4 years.
The first BOD was confirmed at the inaugural DAANA Reunion in Dallas, TX in August 2016.
Dr. Moizuddin is from the 1988 Batch of DCMS. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. During his training in New York he was awarded “Resident of the year” award for exemplary performance. His clinical interests include Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, COPD, Overlap Syndrome and home non-invasive ventilation. He is a founding member of DAANA Mentorship Committee and serves on various other DAANA Committees.

Dr. M Taruj Ali is from the 1990 Batch of DCMS. He is board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as well as Sleep Medicine. Dr. Mujahid Ali Syed is a mental health specialist who has devoted his life to the betterment of humanity through his professional, philanthropic, and community service in White Rock, British Columbia. Dr. Syed trained in India, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Dr. Syed is a qualified specialist in psychiatry and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is working as a consultant psychiatrist and addiction specialist and heads the department for mental health and substance use at the White Rock MHC & Peace Arch hospital. He holds an academic appointment as a clinical lecturer at the University of British Columbia. He is also a fellow of the International Institute of Organizational Psychological Medicine.
Dr. Syed’s professional activities extend locally, nationally, and internationally. Having worked with diverse populations on three continents, and eloquence of many languages, Dr. Syed has a keen understanding of the cultural and linguistic nuances that are essential for establishing rapport with people of diverse backgrounds from all age groups. He is active with educational programs and as part of the scientific committee for ICPA, organized well-acclaimed CME programs with International speakers. For the UBC Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Syed is a site director for the Postgraduate education program at Peace Arch hospital.
Dr. Syed strongly believes in the ethos of educating and empowering the poor. Dr. Syed’s leadership role in the governance and stewardship of non-governmental organizations and professional associations has been exemplary. He is a co-founder and honorary CEO of Care Educational Societies, co-founder and vice president of Step to Humanity, founding Board of director for Deccan Alumni Association of North America(DAANA), secretary of Indo-Canadian Psychiatric Association (ICPA), and on the executive board as a community representative for British Columbia Psychiatric Association (BCPA).
Hafiz Baseer Qazi, M.D, is from the 1996 batch of Deccan College of Medical Sciences. Prior to medical school he completed his hifz from IIE (Institute of Islamic Education, Elgin) and was the first student of this institute. He is a practicing medical physician specializing in the field of gastroenterology. In addition to gastroenterology his focus includes education and currently he is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Rosalind Franklin University (North Chicago) and the associate program director of the gastroenterology fellowship at Advocate Lutheran General hospital.
Currently he is also involved with enhancing the educational experience and overall functioning of the Sacred Link hifz program at Islamic foundation school. He is married to Dr. Dania Mehmood Qazi and has 4 children. He enjoys traveling, playing volleyball and is passionate about volunteer work to improve the community around us.

Dr. Mohammad Sajed is the medical director of stroke and neurocritical care at Edward Hospital, Edward Neurosciences Institute, Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare, in Naperville, IL. The Edward Neurosciences Institute in affiliation with the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation offers world-class stroke care for patients who suffer strokes or have other neurological disorders.
Dr. Sajed is board certified in neurocritical care, neurology, vascular neurology (stroke), and headache medicine.
Dr. Sajed earned his medical degree from the Deccan College of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India. Dr. Sajed was the director of stroke and neurocritical care at the Swedish-American Hospital in Rockford, and the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine, where he was an assistant professor. He also was director of the stroke and neurocritical care at Blanchard Valley Health System in Findlay, Ohio, and on the medical staff of Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, division of neurology, stroke and critical care neurology.
Dr. Sajed is a member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Stroke Association/American Heart Association (AHA), Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and Neurocritical Care Society.
Dr. Sajed also is one of the founding board members of the IL State Neurological Society and also CMMA, Chicago Muslim Medical Alliance.
Dr. Sajed likes to work with refugees and had gone on a medical mission to Bangladesh to help Rohingya Refugees and also likes to help new graduates and college students with research and rotations in his NeuroICU at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL.
Dr. Afshan Khan is an alumnus of the 96 batches of DCMS. She completed her elementary, and middle school education at St Ann’s High School in Hyderabad and her intermediate education at St Ann’s Junior College. Afshan started with postgraduate training in Psychiatry at Guy’s and St. Thomas hospital and finished her senior house officer training at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. She moved to the United States in 2006 and while in California did research work on Autism at UC Davis. She started her psychiatry training with an internship at Maine Medical Center and finished off with a Fellowship in Child Psychiatry at UTSW, Austin. After a 5 year stint as inpatient director for a 40-bed inpatient unit, she now owns an outpatient practice with a primary focus on a holistic approach towards mental illness. She is keenly involved in Integrative Psychiatry and is due to start a Fellowship in July 2020. Experiencing medicine on three different continents and three different states makes her understanding quite broad and a great patient advocate. Her passion for children and women empowerment has her involved in nonprofit organizations like Connecther and Girl Scouts. She loves to travel and be a glorified chauffeur to her 3 daughters.

Dr. Aparna Reddy Mahakala is an 1989 batch DCMS alumnus. She is a Board Certified Endocrinologist and has her private practice clinic in Atlanta where she manages complex diabetic patients and treats diverse hormonal and metabolic dysfunctions. She is the director of the weight management program where she focuses on reducing obesity. She is also an assistant director of the research program in her clinic.
She is passionate about cooking, traveling, playing, and watching different sports. She likes to listen to music and enjoys dancing and learning to play sitar.
Her ambition in life is to live to the best of her abilities and to be able to serve humbly and always open to receiving any suggestions and providing help to the alumni.

His academic appointments include EEG fellowship program director, section head for The International Center for Epilepsy, section head for The McCasland Family Comprehensive Headache Center at Ochsner Health; and associate professor at Ochsner Clinical School/the University of Queensland, New Orleans, LA. He is passionate about clinical research, medical education, and healthcare innovation. He serves as an advisor for several healthcare start-ups. Dr. Shaista Safder is an alumnus of the 1995 batch of DCMS. She has lived in the United States since 2001. Dr. Safder MD FAAP, serves as Director of the Pediatric GI Motility Laboratory and Director of the Healthy Lifestyle Program at the Center for Digestive Health and Nutrition at the Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Florida. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, as well as a Pediatric Gastroenterology Attending at the Center for Digestive Health and Nutrition. She currently serves as the chair of the pediatric obesity committee with the Florida chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Her research interests include motility disorders, allergic gastro enteropathies, defecation disorders, obesity medicine, and medical education.
She and her husband call Florida home and are enjoying raising their two kids in the Sunny state. She loves to travel, have good food, and time spent with loved ones. Her faith and her family ground her and impact every decision she makes. She hopes to serve in her role on the Board of Directors with humility, honesty, and humanity.

Dr. Shariff is an Endocrinologist with a focus on endocrine disease in cancer patients specifically immune-related endocrine toxicities. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She completed her graduate medical training at Deccan College of Medical Sciences followed by an Internal Medicine residency at East Carolina University and a fellowship in Endocrinology at Duke University School of Medicine. She has been a faculty at Duke since 2017.
Over the last few years as a clinical endocrinologist and faculty at Duke, Dr. Shariff has developed collaborations with oncologists and established expertise in managing endocrine toxicities from immunotherapy. This is a new field in endocrinology with a small number of experts nationally. As part of her work, she works in tandem with oncologists and other sub-specialists to develop management protocols, and streamline clinical care in complex oncology patients. She serves as the Associate Director for the Multi-Disciplinary Toxicity Program at the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy at Duke Cancer Institute. In addition, she is the founding Director for the Duke Endo-Oncology Program which is uniquely positioned to streamline care for cancer patients with new and pre-existing endocrine diseases. Apart from her clinical work, she strongly believes in the creative use of technology to enhance educational opportunities for learners. She produces and hosts a medical podcast series called CheckpointNOW that attracts audiences from around the world.
Apart from work she enjoys exploring cultures through food and travel. She is an art and fitness enthusiast and enjoys time with her kids and husband.

Dr.Altaf Aman is a Hospitalist at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL & at Northwestern Medicine in Huntley, IL. He’s based out of Chicago, IL. After finishing medical school in DCMS, he did an internship in general surgery at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia and then FM residency at the LSU in Shreveport Monroe Program and has been a Hospitalist since then at different hospitals.
Dr.Aman volunteers at the Hayat Clinic for the underprivileged in the Chicago area and has been on a medical mission overseas to help the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. He has been on the mentorship committee associated with DAANA and has held the position of chair for the mentorship program.
He’s among the Editors of the medical school magazine, Odyssey, whose second Edition was published in 2018 at the mega union in Chicago. He held an exhibition of his photographs taken from his phone in Hyderabad and raised close to 1.8 lacs which was donated to DAANA to be used for charitable causes.
Dr.Aman loves to hold events and was part of the DAANA Global Mega Reunion in Chicago in 2018 and the DAANA Chicago get-together in 2021.

Dr. Raza Khan is from the 1984 Batch of DCMS. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. He works as a hospitalist in Allina Health System in Minneapolis, MN. He used to work in Duluth, MN where he was an Adjunct Associate Professor at UMD and also the CME Director. He also attended Physician Leadership College at St. Thomas University. YASMIN ANSARI, MD
Dr. Jabeen Taj is an alumnus of the 1997 Batch of DCMS. She did her elementary and middle school education in Sharjah, U.A.E before moving to Hyderabad, India for higher secondary education. Her intermediate (pre-med) education was at St. Ann’s Junior College for Women in Hyderabad. At the time, she was interested in studying Genetics but admission to Deccan College of Medical Sciences got her interested in the epidemiology of diseases and Internal Medicine. After completing her residency in Internal Medicine, her interest in cardiology led her to the University of Iowa where her primary clinical duties were as a cardiovascular hospitalist. Working closely with advanced heart failure and transplant/VAD patients, she decided to pursue a fellowship in supportive care/palliative medicine and is now leading the cardiac palliative care program at Emory. Her research interests include the management of non-classic symptoms of heart failure, embedded clinic models of supportive care for advanced heart failure patients in the outpatient setting, and population health.
Dr. Taj enjoys spending time with family, adventure sports, and traveling. She is an avid reader and enjoys classic literature.

Dr. Farha Ikramuddin is an alumnus of the 85 batches of DCMS.
She completed her elementary and middle school education at The Indian Embassy School in Jeddah KSA. She graduated her high school at St Georges Girls Grammar school in Hyderabad, completing her intermediate education at Stanley Girls College.
Dr. Farha started with Internal Medicine at UPMC Pittsburgh, but a holistic approach to patients piqued her interest in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Following completing her residency in PM&R, she was invited back to academia by her Chair to lead the inpatient unit. Her practice involves Neurological Rehabilitation, with a special focus on spasticity leading to her outpatient clinics in Botox for migraine headaches and spasticity following stroke.
Her research interests are in stem cells as a treatment modality following the initial stroke, and rehabilitative approaches to ameliorate neural plasticity
Being part of ‘The emerging Physician Leadership program’, peaked interest in administration, and she completed “A Master of Health Administration”. As such, her career has taken a turn to administration. She is currently the Medical Director of Neurosciences for Neurology, Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, and PM&R.

Farha Ikramuddin, MD, MHA
Dr. Ismail Shakaib is from the 1993 Batch of DCMS. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is in private practice as a Nephrologist in Chicago, IL with Northwest Healthcare Associates. Dr. Shakaib graduated in the top 3% of his Medical School Class and has been practicing since 2004. His special interests include Acute Kidney Injury, Chronic Kidney Disease, and ESRD.
